Just as patients should be informed of the risks, benefits and alternatives of accepting treatment recommendations, they should also be informed of the potential consequences of refusing a proposed treatment or procedure. For example, a patient who refuses a periodontal referral must also understand the potential risks of irreversible damage, bone loss, increased pocket depths, tooth mobility, and overall dental health decline.
